Press release: As the Slovak Government apologizes for forcible sterilizations of Romani women today, the next step must be compensating them

The Slovak Government adopted a resolution in which it apologized to Romani women for forced sterilizations and condemned the practice. Our NGO welcomes the Resolution but highlights that Slovakia must also compensate Romani women in order to meet the obligation under international human rights standards.

In September 2021, we sent a submission to the Advisory Committee for the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, in which we describe  shortcomings in the implementation of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities by the Slovak government in relation to the Roma minority in Slovakia.

State authorities in Slovakia are paying increased attention to the need to compensate illegally sterilized women. The Slovak government is also being called upon to take systemic measures by the Ombudswoman and international bodies, and these days the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights.

On Friday, 4 June 2021, the lower house of the Czech parliament passed a bill on compensation for illegally sterilized persons. Based on it, a number of Roma women in the Czech Republic who had been harmed by this practice in the past could be financially compensated.

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (ECtHR) ruled on a case of police violence against three Roma boys that occurred in a police car during their transfer to a police station in Košice, Eastern Slovakia, in 2009.

The European Court of Human Rights by its judgment in the case of M.B. and Others v. Slovakia of 1 April 2021 ruled that Slovakia had violated the right of three Roma boys to an effective investigation into the police violence they objected.

The Regional Court in Kosice at today's public hearing dismissed the Prosecutor´s appeal against the acquittal judgment of the District Court Košice II of 4 December 2019 in a widely medialised case of ill-treatment against six Roma boys at a police station in Košice.

In November 2020, together with partner NGOs European Roma Rights Centre and Forum for Human Rights, we sent our joint statement to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, in which we point out the insufficient implementation of the European Court of Human Rights judgment in the case - Lakatošová and Lakatoš v. Slovakia.
